Siroy Lily
Shirui Lily or Siroy Lily (Botanical nome: Lilium mocklinioe)
was discovered by Frank Kingdon-Word, on English
Botonist in 1946. lt is the State Flower of Monipur and
blooms in months of Moy and June. lt is found only in the
upper reaches on Siroi hill ranges in Ukhrul District ofA/
lanipur, India, at an elevation of about 2000m above sea
level. Local Tangkhul Naga folklore has it that this flower
adorns the beautiful goddess, Philava, who inhabits the
Shiroi Kashong (peak). The beautiful light pinkish lily won
the prestigious merit prize of the 1948 Royal Horticultural
Society Flower Show in London. Siroi Lily is one of the
rarest faunas of the world and has unfortunately become
an endangered species in India.
Sangai Deer
The Sangai is an endemic, rare and endangered
Brow-antlered deer found in North East Indian State
of Manipur, India. Its habitat, the marshy wetland in
Keibul Lamjao about 45 km from Imphal is protected
as the Keibul Lamjao National Park. Sangai feed on
a variety of water living plants, grasses, herbaceous
plants, and shoots. Culturally, the Sangai finds itself
embedded deep into the legends and folklore of
the Manipuris. Based on a popular folk legend, the
Sangai is interpreted as the binding soul between
humans and the nature. Sangai is also the state
animal of Manipur.
